The Ultimate Guide to Fayetteville, West Virginia in One Weekend

Hello Loves,

Last week I traveled to Fayetteville, West Virginia with West Virginia Tourism. From rafting the New River, to stand up paddleboarding on Summersville Lake, I loved every moment of this adventure filled weekend. A well-planned weekend will take you through all the highlights this beautiful city has to offer.

Here is my ultimate guide to Fayetteville, West Virginia in a weekend!

Stay at an Adventure Resort

Fayetteville’s adventure resorts have a variety of lodging options. From luxury mountain cabins, to simple campsites, the resorts have accommodations for everyone! The resorts also offer on-site activities like rafting, stand up paddleboarding, climbing, and more.

I stayed in the coziest a-frame cabin at Ace Adventure Resort. A few other wonderful adventure resorts in the area are Adventures on the Gorge and River Expeditions.

Breakfast at the Cathedral Café

Enjoy the turmeric latte and sweet potato pancakes at Fayetteville’s Cathedral Café. This adorable café is known for its usage of local and seasonal ingredients.

Stand-Up Paddleboard on Summersville Lake

Summersville Lake is the largest lake in West Virginia, with over 60 miles of shoreline at the summer pool water level. Experiencing this beautiful lake is a must while visiting West Virginia.

Adventures on the Gorge offers an exciting Half Day Summersville Lake Adventure. Relax on the pontoon boat, explore on a stand-up paddleboard, or try your hand at lakeside rock climbing. With three different adventures in one, this is an unforgettable outdoor experience.

Dinner at Smokey’s Steakhouse

Smokey’s is a top-level steak house with a casual atmosphere. Their optional outdoor deck seating offers spectacular views of the New River Gorge and incredible Appalachian sunsets.
(Local Tip – Save room for dessert!)

After Dinner Aerial Adventure

Adventures on the Gorge offers Moontrek. A wild zig-zag of obstacles, bridges and zip lines between platforms high in the forest canopy. Conquer four wooded acres and over 60 platforms above the forest floor…at night. In the dark.

Breakfast at Lakeside Breakfast Buffet

Enjoy the hot coffee and homemade muffins at the Lakeside Breakfast Buffet. This delicious buffet offers a wide variety of get-you-fueled-for-a-day-of-adventure options.

Raft the New River

Explore one of the most popular and scenic rivers east of the Mississippi on a whitewater rafting trip. Ace Adventure Resort offers half, full, and overnight whitewater rafting trips.

I experienced the Lower New Half Day trip. It was my favorite part of my weekend in West Virginia! We rafted all morning, beached our rafts on the side of the river for a picnic lunch, rafted for another few hours, jumped out of the rafts and swam underneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge, and ended our adventure with drinks. It was AMAZING.

Late Lunch at Secret Sandwich Society

This restaurant offers combinations of sweet, savory, pickled, crunchy, salty and spicy mingle on perfectly toasted bread. The Secret Sandwich Society is 100% wind powered and recycles everything they can in an effort protect the environment.
(Local Tip – Get the pimento cheese fries!)

Zip Line/Canopy Tour Adventure

River expeditions offers an exciting zip line/canopy tour adventure. Thrill-seeker meets nature-lover for this exciting 1 to 2 hour treetop experience. This adventure offers a rare perspective of the rugged West Virginia forest and wildlife.

Dinner at Pies & Pints

Enjoy specialty pizza and craft beer at the original Pies and Pints.
(Local Tip – Get the Grape & Gorgonzola specialty pie!)

Coffee at Top Knot Coffee and Artisan Shop

Before you fly or drive out of town, grab coffee at Top Knot Coffee and Artisan Shop. This alpaca themed coffee shop promotes local artisans and alpaca products.
